What is it?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Most limestone is composed of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. A limestone counter top is velvety smooth like soapstone. A unique characteristic of this natural stone is the fossils and seashells often found embedded in the surface, adding an organic element to the countertop.

Love & Care

Limestone is more porous than marble or granite, and is therefore easily stained and etched by acids. Avoid setting beverage glasses directly on limestone as they leave rings. Fruit juice, carbonated beverages or other acids will etch (removing the shiny surface) if allowed to remain there.
Wipe up spills immediately with a wet cloth, or neutral pH detergents. If the surfaced is etched, polishing may be required.
The best way to prevent stains is to treat the surface with a protective, penetrating sealer. The sealer fills in the pores and repels spills on the surface, allowing you time to completely wipe it away. Sealers will help to prevent staining and reduce soiling.
